About
Changing Sound
Changing Sound is a music therapy provider that is able to facilitate music therapy sessions for a range of client groups in a variety of settings.
We can provide private services or sessions within organisations (schools, hospitals etc), as well as provide mental health/ wellbeing support to staff within organisations.
Martha Raban (lead therapist) studied Music at undergraduate level before becoming a qualified teacher. While teaching, Martha was struck by the complexity of the students emotional needs and how Social, Emotional Mental Health needs and trauma could be a huge barrier to learning. However, the music classroom seemed to be a space where students could engage differently, they had more agency and enthusiasm, they were more engaged and less defensive.
This pushed Martha to be more curious about how creativity could work as a therapeutic outlet, and she left teaching to gain an MA in Music Therapy at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Since qualifying Martha has set up a successful music therapy service in Shepherds Bush, primarily working with children and young people with learning disabilities and additional needs. She also works for both local and national arts therapy organisations.
Martha has extensive experience working with children, and also spent time within the NHS delivering group and individual music therapy on an acute adult psychiatric ward.
Therapeutic Approaches
Changing Sound uses psychotherapy as a basis for the majority of its therapeutic work, however can additionally draw on a whole range of therapeutic tools and knowledge to ensure sessions are effectively tailored to individuals. This might include elements of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), MBT (Mentalisation Based Therapy), humanistic approaches, and using a range of creative mediums such as art, movement, and acting alongside music. For more information about what these different approaches might look like in therapy please refer to our Resources Page.
